A Reminder that all Boy Scouts start using the “new” Boy Scout requirements Jan 1, 2017.

Posted on Dec 17 2016 - 3:54pm

Is there a deadline for using the “old” requirements?

Yes. Dec. 31, 2016, is the last day to sign off on requirements using the old requirements.

So what if a youth is partially done with a rank on Dec. 31, 2016?

He would not need to “start over” and repeat all of the requirements for that rank. He must only complete new requirements and any new elements of requirements.
If the wording of a completed rank requirement has not changed and that requirement was signed off on or prior to Dec. 31, 2016, the approval should be transferred to the corresponding new requirements.

For Tenderfoot through First Class ranks, this may include approvals that were previously listed in a different rank.

World Conservation Award has new requirements, effective immediately

Posted on Dec 17 2016 - 3:27pm

The BSA National Conservation and Environment Task Force has announced new requirements for the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing/Sea Scout versions of the World Conservation Award. The new requirements, which are now in effect, can be found at this link.

Whether you know the World Conservation Award as the “panda patch” or as the award that encourages Scouts and Venturers to think globally and act locally to improve and conserve our environment, there’s something you need to know.

The new requirements reflect the recent changes to the Cub Scout advancement program and the addition of the Eagle-required Sustainability merit badge in the Boy Scout program.

Modifications to Cub Scout program give Den Leaders more flexibility

Posted on Dec 2 2016 - 6:25pm

The Boy Scouts of America has announced modifications to Cub Scouting that make the program more flexible for busy parents, Den Leaders and Cubmasters.

The BSA gathered feedback from Den Leaders who had delivered the new Cub Scouting program for a year. What they learned was that some Den Leaders had difficulty fitting into their program year all of the adventures required for advancement. This resulted in boys not advancing. After a thoughtful and deliberate review, the BSA has released some modifications to address this concern.

What are the modifications? Click on "Read More" for the full story.

Silver Comet Units Recruit 881 new Scouts

Posted on Nov 19 2016 - 8:53pm

Our District Membership Committee, the District Executives, and our Units combined to recruit 881 new Scouts during our Fall Recruiting Campaign. At the close of the Campaign on November 1st Silver Comet had recruited the most Scouts of any District in the Atlanta Area Council!
Council Fall recruiting reached a total of 8051 new Scouts and Explorers, the most Scouts recruited since the early 2000s.
Thanks and a standing round of applause goes to our District Membership Chair Pamela Saunders and her Committee, our District Executives Kalia Quarles, Drew Doherty, and Kevin Magby, and all of the Units and District folks that made this happen.
The most important result of our fall campaign is the fact that more families are joining the Scouting movement and Scouting in the Atlanta Area Council is thriving. Be sure to share that message with anyone and everyone who will listen!

Scoutmasters – OA Elections begin in December

Posted on Nov 12 2016 - 5:18pm

Egwa Tawa Dee Order of the Arrow Lodge has set December 13, 2016 to mid-March 2017 as the Order of the Arrow election window.
Our local Silepl Ilaonetu OA Chapter is preparing their teams to conduct elections and they need you to look at your Troop Calendars, identify one or two dates for your election, and contact them to schedule your election date as soon as you can at oaelections@silvercometdistrictbsa.org

In order to accommodate all of Silver Comet’s 37 Troops that wish to hold an OA election, the Chapter teams will need to spread election dates throughout the December to mid-March window.
Don’t let your Scouts lose out on the Order of the Arrow experience because of scheduling conflicts or running out of time!
