Silver Comet Turkey Shoot Draws 650 Cub Scouts

Posted on Nov 12 2016 - 5:15pm

With 650 Cub Scouts, all the Siblings, Parents, Pack Leaders, and Adult and Youth Staff, nearly 2,000 of our Silver Comet Scout Family enjoyed a great day out at our 2016 Turkey Shoot.
Our event host, Troop 350, ordered up perfect weather for the day at Jim Miller Park, and our Cub Scouts and Families took advantage of it to shoot BBs and Arrows, scale the Climbing Wall, do a little fishing, and have a lot of fun.
It takes an experienced and talented Committee of dedicated Scouters to plan, organize, and present an event of this size, and we Thank each and every volunteer that contributed in any way to the huge success of the day.

Special recognition goes to the longtime Leaders that bring this event to life every year, Steve Helbling, R J Kolencik, and Randy Thacker.

Thank You

Kalia Quarles returning to Soapstone - Kevin Magby joining Silver Comet

Posted on Oct 15 2016 - 6:15pm

After an all too brief few months with Silver Comet our District Director Kalia Quarles is returning to her former District, Soapstone Ridge. Soapstone is currently in need of experienced guidance and support and who better to provide that than Kalia whom we know to be such a capable, energetic and personable Professional. Kalia has the added advantage of knowing the Scouters and Units in her former District, and will be able to “hit the ground running” as they say, making sure Soapstone Scouting has professional support, encouragement and guidance.

For those accustomed to the occasional gap in District professional personnel while Council finds just the right replacement, we are going to set some sort of record by having no gap at all!
Kevin Magby comes to us from Southwest Atlanta to join our own Drew Doherty in providing Silver Comet with a full professional staff. Kevin is already getting settled into our District and attended our Roundtable this past Thursday.
We welcome Kevin and look forward to working with him to bring outstanding Scouting to all of the Youth in the Silver Comet District.

Silver Comet District Recharter for 2017

Posted on Sep 9 2016 - 4:32pm

Unit Recharter for the upcoming year is just about to kickoff, and we would like to share some very important updates on the process that will be unique for this round of recharters.
First, Silver comet District is moving in steps from the current charter year expiration at the end of January 2017, to a Calendar year charter for 2018.
This change will begin with this year’s recharter applying for only 11 months, February 2017 through the end of December 2017.
In order to complete this recharter process on time and without undue stress and frustration please note the following points.
PICK UP RECHARTER PACKETS at October 13th Roundtable: Every Unit must send a representative to the October Roundtable to meet briefly with the Commissioners and pick up and sign for their Recharter packet. Questions about Recharter Packet pickup can be directed to: recharter@silvercometdistrictbsa.org

Samantha Schuster is the new Silver Comet Training Committee Chair

Posted on Aug 6 2016 - 2:32pm

Samantha Schuster is our new District Training Chair, and looks forward to continuing the outstanding Training program and events established over the last 4 years by our retiring Chair, Jeff Starnes. Jeff will continue to support the Council training programs and will remain active at the District level.

Samantha has considerable BSA Training background and experience, and has been working alongside Jeff over this past year to ensure a smooth transition of all of our District Training Committee functions and Training events.

As we move into the Fall Training schedule Silver Comet District is offering both Indoor and Outdoor Training for Cub Leaders and Boy Scout Leaders. Also, visit our District website Training page to find additional Training courses as they become available.

If your Unit Leaders, Assistant Leaders and Unit Committee Members are not 100% “Trained”, you can look forward to hearing from Samantha, encouraging all Silver Comet Adult Leaders to complete the Training for their position in order to deliver the best possible Scouting experience for all of our Scouts and Venturers.

For any Training related questions, comments, or suggestions contact Samantha at training@silvercometdistrictbsa.org

Over 400 Cub Scouts Attend Silver Comet Day Camps

Posted on Jul 16 2016 - 7:25pm

Our June 2016 Silver Comet Day Camps at Jim Miller Park and Kennesaw United Methodist Church saw over 400 Cub Scouts spend a week of excitement, fun, learning and exercise as they tackled a full program of activities and events.
More than 120 Boy Scout Den Chiefs and 29 Teen Assistants (Girl Scouts and older Sisters) were right there with the Cub Scouts helping with every part of the week’s program and sharing in the fun.

And, of course, guiding the whole show and watching over all of the Youth were more than 160 Adults who so generously gave their time, and focused their thoughts on the safety of the Cub Scouts and the quality and success of every activity and event throughout the week.

A standing Round of applause goes to all of the Adults, and we especially recognize our Camp Directors and Leaders who spent many months preparing this fantastic experience for our Silver Comet Cub Scouts and their Families.
On behalf of the Silver Comet District, “Thank You” Dalia Wyman, James and Kim Kammerdiener, Jennifer Kane, Renee Abernathy, Torie Shores, Tracy Jones and many others for a wonderful week of Cub Scout Day Camp.
